They are among the most significant tourist attractions in the city, along with Alcatraz Island, the Golden Gate Bridge, and Fisherman’s Wharf. San Francisco’s cable cars are listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is one of only two street railways to be named a National Historic Landmark.
Ride on a bit of history as we make our way to the Cable Car Museum is a free museum in the Nob Hill neighborhood of San Francisco, California. Located at 1201 Mason Street, containing historical and explanatory exhibits on the San Francisco cable car system, which can itself be regarded as a working museum. The museum is part of the complex that also houses the cable car power house, which drives the cables, and the car depot (“barn”). The car depot is not open to the public, but two galleries allow visitors to view the power house from above, and to descend below the junction of Washington and Mason streets to view the large cavern where the haulage cables are routed via large sheaves out to the street.
Finally we’ll reboard the cable car and head to The Buena Vista, credited with introducing Irish coffee to the United States in 1952. The Buena Vista Café originally opened in 1916 when the first floor of a boardinghouse was converted into a saloon.
